It is easy to make an unfamiliar code look like a date. It is much harder to show that the brand actually encoded the date that way.
Unknown strings may contain numbers that resemble a year, month, or day. Without a verified brand rule, choosing one interpretation is arbitrary. A confident display does not make the underlying evidence stronger.
We show a date only when the selected brand and format are covered. If they are not, the result should say that the rule is unavailable. This protects users from making a decision based on a date the product never encoded.
