What not to enter in a batch-code checker

A package can carry several codes. Only one may relate to the production run. Entering every visible number is not a search strategy.

Common false candidates

• The long digits below a standard striped EAN or UPC barcode.
• A shade name or shade number that identifies a colour.
• A product reference, item number, or size label.
• A serial-looking mark that is not tied to the selected brand format.

Why this matters in our data

Of 1,099,248 failed lookups in our analysis, 17.6% were strings that were not batch codes at all, and another 9.7% were product barcodes. Find the production-run reference first; a checker cannot repair the wrong input.
